Every time your mitochondria produce energy, they generate a byproduct: reactive oxygen species (ROS). In small, regulated amounts, ROS are a normal — even useful — part of cell signaling. The problem starts when production outpaces your body's ability to neutralize them.

Think of It Like Rust

Oxidative stress is often compared to rust forming on metal — a slow, cumulative process of molecular wear. When ROS build up faster than your antioxidant systems can clear them, they can damage cell membranes, proteins, and even mitochondrial DNA itself. Over time, this contributes to the kind of gradual mitochondrial decline associated with fatigue and slower metabolism.

Glutathione production depends on adequate protein intake, good sleep, and certain nutrients found in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower. More Antioxidants Isn't Always Better

It's tempting to think "if some antioxidants are good, more must be better." But research on high-dose antioxidant supplementation has produced mixed results, and some studies suggest that megadosing certain antioxidants (particularly in isolated, synthetic form) can interfere with beneficial cellular signaling — including some of the adaptive processes triggered by exercise. Food-based sources, which come packaged with a wide variety of complementary compounds, are generally considered a more reliable approach than very high-dose single supplements.

  1. Eat a colorful plate: Berries, leafy greens, and orange vegetables (like carrots and sweet potatoes) provide a range of antioxidant compounds — polyphenols, carotenoids, vitamin C — that work together rather than in isolation.
  2. Don't chase megadoses: Whole-food sources and moderate supplementation are generally preferable to extremely high-dose isolated antioxidants.
  3. Support glutathione directly: Adequate protein intake, consistent sleep, and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli all support your body's own antioxidant production.

Reducing the sources of excess oxidative stress — smoking, chronic sleep deprivation, ultra-processed diets — often has a bigger impact than any single antioxidant food or supplement added on top of an otherwise unaddressed lifestyle factor.
